Abstract

The article provides a comparative assessment of the methods of laying grain crops to determine the laboratory germination of seeds. The authors applied seed germination methods: on paper and on sand. In most varieties of grain crops, the number of germinated seeds was higher in the sand compared to a roll of paper (by 1–25 pieces). The length of the shoots of oats (10.0 cm) and triticale (12.3–12.8 cm) had maximum values in the sand. It was found that the method of seed germination had a significant effect on the root length index. For the spring oat varieties Dalnevostochnyi Zolotoi (tf=3,43; t05=2,02) and Marshal (tf=3,77; t05=2,02), the laboratory germination of seeds was significantly higher on sand than in rolls. The spring soft wheat variety Anfeya (tf=5,51; t05=2,02) and the spring barley variety Khabarovskii (tf=3,00; t05=2,02) have significantly higher seed germination on sand. There were no statistical differences between the seed germination on sand and the roll method for the wheat variety Dalira (tf=2,00; t05=2,02) and the barley variety Musson (tf=–0,01; t05=2,02). No statistically significant differences were found between the methods for the spring triticale variety Uchenik (tf=1,19; t05=2,02) and the breeding line T-28 (tf=–1,69; t05=2,02). The optimal method for determining the laboratory germination of seeds for oats is germination in the sand. At the same time, for wheat and barley, the choice of method depends on the characteristics of the variety and the risk of fungal diseases. For triticale, it is acceptable to use both methods of seed laying. For a comprehensive assessment of the quality of grain seeds, we recommended using the method of germination in sand, taking into account varietal characteristics and the root length index.
